My name is Shulamis. I am 19 years old—and I need help to stay alive.
A few weeks ago, I was a carefree kallah, happily wrapped up in wedding errands and prep. I had to-do lists, a full calendar and plans galore.
All my plans unraveled in one terrifying moment.
I started feeling some really unusual and strong pains. At first, I chalked the pain up to wedding nerves, but eventually I couldn’t ignore it anymore. A visit to my doctor ended up with me in the emergency room, undergoing endless testing.
The diagnosis stopped my life in its tracks: I was diagnosed with stage-4 cancer that has spread throughout my body.
My wedding is cancelled, and I’ve released the wonderful man I was engaged to from his commitment. He can’t be tied down to someone who is dying.
Now, instead of planning a future, I am fighting for my life.
Doctors believe an experimental medication may save me.
It costs 30,000 shekels every month and is not yet covered by Israeli national health insurance.
My family cannot afford this alone. My father is an avreich. My mother is a teacher. I’m the oldest of 6 children.
