My name is Gila miriam Ghermiza,
I’m just a typical mother in Israel, I don’t belong on campaign pages. But my name has been blasted all over the world, as my family campaigns for my life.
The picture above shows me in a wheelchair, surrounded by my husband, children, and grandchildren. It’s a beautiful picture but it brings tears to my eyes as I look at it now. I don’t know if we’ll ever take such a picture again.
I’ve been living with ALS for the past 8 years. It’s a tremendous challenge, one I don’t wish on anyone. I’m confined to my bed, unable to speak, sit up, or hold my children's hands. But there’s one thing that bothers me tremendously: 3 months ago my condition deteriorated, and I’m now too difficult to transport out of my second-floor apartment.
I don’t know if you realize what that means: I can’t go to any medical appointments, I haven’t felt the summer sun on my face, and I can’t go to my children's homes. I’ve suffered a tremendous amount with ALS, but my ability to go out with my family gave me a small feeling of being a regular part of society. Now, I feel locked in, a constant reminder of my handicapped state.
We have one hope: If we install an elevator in our building, I can once again experience the joy of being outdoors. My husband has set up a limited-time campaign to raise $40,000 to install an elevator in our building.
I’m begging of you to listen to my one request and allow me one last semblance of normality in my life. Without help, I’m doomed to live the rest of my life without leaving my apartment.
With endless Hakarat Hatov,
Gila Miriam Ghermiza
Modiin Ilit, Israel.
